When the Hartford Courant dropped daily coverage of the Chester, Deep River, and Essex region last year, we felt it was important to fill the gap. We were fortunate when we launched to have former Hartford Courant reporter Charlie Stannard resume his old beat in the three towns.

As old media gives way to new, partnerships and collaborations will be critical to building a sustainable hyperlocal news infrastructure. To that end, we’re excited to announce the launch of ValleyNewsNow.com, brought to you by Olwen Logan and the people behind LymeLine.com and OldSaybrookNow.com. ValleyNewsNow.com will now be the new home of Chester, Deep River, and Essex coverage. Charlie Stannard will continue his reporting there.

You’ll get to know some new faces who will bring news and information on local entertainment and the arts. We will also benefit from the expanded regional coverage that this partnership will provide. LocalOnlineNews.TV is not going away. Our core business, hyperlocal video, is growing rapidly in other parts of the state and we need to focus our resources on continued video growth.

You’ll be seeing some of our video journalists reporting for the new entity soon. We thank you for your support and interest.

Be sure to set your bookmarks to ValleyNewsNow.com!

This Thursday it's the GOP's turn at Asnuntuck College in Enfield.  Along with CTNewsJunkie.com we'll be broadcasting a debate double header featuring Senate candidates Peter Shiff and Rob Simmons as well as Gubernatorial candidates Mike Fedele and Oz Griebel.  LocalOnlineNews.TV alum George Colli will moderate along with a panel of journalists asking questions.

We'll be using some new technology that will allow for multiple camera angles and a more professional looking presentation. Visit http://www.localonlinenews.tv/live/ starting at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 29th!

One of the most satisfying things we do at LocalOnlineNews.TV is work with very talented reporters at the very start of their careers. George Colli, who covered the Republican Convention for us and CTNewsJunkie.com, was picked up by Hartford's Fox61 just a few days after his stories went live on our sites. Here's a story he filed last night with Fox, helping victims of the recent Tornado in Bridgeport:

Wed, 17 Mar 2010 06:46:34 -0700 Why You Should Opt Out Of the $16 Comcast Settlement http://blog.localonlinenews.tv/why-you-should-opt-out-of-the-16-comcast-sett http://blog.localonlinenews.tv/why-you-should-opt-out-of-the-16-comcast-sett

On this week's This Week In Media we discussed the $16 class action settlement Comcast will be offering to customers impacted by the company's throttling of bit torrent and other peer to peer applications.  You can hear our discussion of the settlement at the 39 minute mark.

As the title of this week's show indicates, it's important to read the fine print, specifically the bolded sections below from the settlement's FAQ:

You will be considered part of the Settlement Class unless you exclude yourself. By staying in the Settlement Class, all Court orders apply to you, and you give Comcast and all of its affiliated companies and their predecessors and successors (the “Released Parties”), a “release” for claims arising out of or relating to Comcast’s management of P2P or Lotus Notes on its High-Speed Internet network or Comcast’s disclosures related to those practices up until the date of final approval of the Settlement Agreement, including but not limited to all claims that were brought or could have been brought in this Action or the Related Actions. A release means you cannot sue or be part of any other lawsuit against the Released Parties about the claims or issues in this lawsuit ever again. The full release is available in the Settlement Agreement.

This means that even if you opt not to collect your $16, you're still considered part of the settlement class.  And by being a member of the Settlement Class you will give up any right to sue Comcast or their successors in the future if the company throttles your content ever again.

Thankfully there is a way out.  Simply send a letter (and I suggest getting delivery confirmation) expressing your wish to be excluded from the settlement class to the claims administrator here, postmarked no later than May 13, 2010:

P2P Congestion Settlement Claims Administrator
c/o Rust Consulting
P.O. Box 9454
Minneapolis, MN 55440-9454

Anyone in the content creation business needs to do this immediately.  Is it really worth the $16 to throw your rights away?

-Lon

Times are changing and audiences are getting more fragmented.  Newspaper readership is shifting from print to digital and cable is so disjointed (with two satellite providers and now AT&T Uverse) that it's no longer an effective local advertising tool in Connecticut.

Our friend Daisy Whitney talked with a number of ad execs on some of the challenges and opportunities associated with online video advertising.  Even the big firms are discovering that narrowing the focus of their demographic targets through online advertising can bring results (with the right data of course).

We built our business model around aggregation and tracking performance.  Thanks to our friends at Tubemogul we're able to track any LocalOnlineNews.TV video wherever and whenever it is played.  We can even tell advertisers how many people watched their message and for how long.

Give us a call at 888-267-2895 or visit our advertising information page to learn more.

All of our videos have been iPhone ready from the start.  Simply navigate to LocalOnlineNews.tv from your iPhone's browser and video plays just like it does on a desktop.  As nice as this solution worked, it lacked the simplicity of other mobile websites and applications currently on the platform.

We experimented with a mobile version of our website, podcast feeds, and other mobile strategies but none were as functional as a customized application.

Thankfully the folks at iSites have put together a fantastic platform for building custom iPhone apps that should work seamlessly with our current content distribution infrastructure.  The app will aggregate and organize video from all of our properties throughout Connecticut into a very simple to use application.  Stories will appear around the same time they're uploaded to the main site.

We built the app this afternoon and are now just waiting on approval from iSites and Apple.  Users of Android platform phones (like the Verizon Droid) will soon have an app of their own too.

As with all of our content, the app will be free.  We'll let you know just as soon as everything is available.

Roku_player_hd

Blip.TV is now including us in their channel on the Roku Player, adding yet another option to watch us on your television!  Videos will appear on the Roku at the same time they are posted on our site.  To find us, first load the Blip.TV channel store on your Roku box, go to the search option, and enter the letter "L" with your remote.  LocalOnlineNews should pop up on the first page of search results.

Roku now has three player options, ranging from $79 to $130.  We like the mid-range unit that sells for $99.  In addition to streaming web content, the Roku also connects to Amazon's video on demand store as well as Netflix's streaming service.  Other services like Pandora are already on the box, and Roku's new channel store promises many more services in the future.

We are looking for Tivo HD owners to contact us so that we can make sure our RSS feed is compatible with that device.   Our West Hartford video podcast feed is located at http://localonlinenews.tv/wh.xml .

Stay tuned!
